COURSE CURRICULUM

The Drama program at Queen’s leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and can be pursued alone or alongside a Minor, with electives allowing completion of a minimum of 120 units. The core curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Thinking Locally and Acting Globally or Introduction to Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies, providing students with an understanding of theatre in both local and global contexts. Students then advance through courses in Theatre Histories and Traditions, Play Reading and Analysis, Introduction to Theatre Production I, and Theatre Practicum, developing critical and practical skills simultaneously. Foundational acting courses, including Introduction to Acting or Elementary Acting, complement the study of Theatre and Drama in the 20th and 21st Centuries, which explores modern and contemporary theatrical developments. The program also offers specialized options, requiring students to complete 6 units from 400-level Drama courses, 9 units from theory and literature-focused courses, 9 units from applied practice-focused courses, and an additional 6 units from approved Drama or substitute courses. Electives and other plan requirements totaling 60 units provide flexibility for students to tailor their degree according to their interests, explore interdisciplinary connections, or deepen expertise in particular areas of theatre and performance. This structure balances critical inquiry, creative practice, and academic exploration, equipping graduates with the knowledge, technical skills, and artistic insight needed for careers in performance, production, education, and related creative industries.
