COURSE CURRICULUM

The Black Studies undergraduate program at Queen’s University requires students to complete a structured combination of core and option courses totaling 30 units. The core component, comprising 6.0 units, includes foundational courses such as GNDS 312 – Black Feminisms and BLCK 200 – Black Studies and the Politics of Liberation, both providing an introduction to Black Studies with content fully dedicated to the discipline. The 24.0 units of option courses offer students the flexibility to explore a range of topics at multiple levels, allowing for both depth and breadth in the field. These include Black Entry Courses at the 200- and 300-level, designed for students to build foundational knowledge, and Black Capstone Courses at the 400-level, which provide advanced, fully immersive Black Studies content. Intermediate-level courses, accounting for 6.0 units, integrate 75% Black Studies content, while General Courses combine Black Studies with Indigenous Studies perspectives. Breadth Courses, also totaling 6.0 units, focus on broader societal issues such as racism, colonialism, and resistance, equipping students with critical analytical skills and historical context. Together, these core and option courses ensure a comprehensive interdisciplinary education, preparing students to engage thoughtfully with Black Studies scholarship, social justice practices, and anti-oppression work across academic, professional, and community contexts.
