COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish and Latin American Studies Plan, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, requires a total of 90.00 units, combining core courses, options, and electives. Students begin with foundational language courses, completing Beginning Spanish I and II (SPAN 111 and 112), followed by intermediate and advanced Spanish courses (SPAN 204 and 205) to develop strong linguistic skills. The plan emphasizes interdisciplinary study through 18.00 units of option courses selected from two lists, SLAS_Options_A and SLAS_Options_B, which draw from multiple departments across campus. SLAS_Options_A includes courses in language, literature, culture, gender studies, film, and Portuguese, such as Spanish Conversation and Culture (SPAN 206), Advanced Grammar and Composition (SPAN 301 and 302), and Latin American cultural and gender-focused studies. SLAS_Options_B offers courses in art, economics, film, geography, history, political science, and sociology, such as Latin American Art (BARTH 272), Economic Development (ECON 239), Latin American Politics (POLS 342), and Sociology of Globalization (SOCY 225). The remaining 60.00 units are fulfilled through electives, allowing students to tailor their education to complement a Major or pursue broader academic interests.
