COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Biology specialization includes a comprehensive set of courses designed to build a strong foundation in biological sciences and marine ecosystems. Students begin with core bioscience courses such as Foundations in Bioscience, Biology I and II covering molecular, cellular systems, and ecological principles, alongside Chemistry I and II, and introductory physics tailored for biosciences. Programming skills are introduced with an emphasis on scientific applications, supported by mathematics and statistics courses specific to biological sciences. Advanced biology courses include Human Physiology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry, which prepare students for in-depth study of marine life. Specialized marine biology courses focus on the world ocean, marine ecology, coral reef ecology, and marine invertebrate zoology, offering detailed knowledge of marine organisms and their environments. Students also explore bioethics and environmental science, with courses in organic, analytical, and environmental chemistry to understand chemical processes affecting marine ecosystems. Research methods and comparative zoology enhance practical and analytical skills. Ecology courses provide insight into environmental interactions, all preparing students for hands-on learning experiences, including a semester abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. This curriculum equips students with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills essential for careers and research in marine biology and environmental sciences.
