COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nuclear Engineering program at Ontario Tech University features a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the theoretical foundation and practical skills needed to work in Canada’s nuclear industry. Core courses include mathematics (Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations), foundational sciences (Physics I and II, Chemistry for Engineers), and essential engineering subjects such as Electric Circuits, Engineering Design, Thermodynamic Cycles, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Strength of Materials. Nuclear-specific courses begin early, with topics such as Interaction of Radiation with Matter, Nuclear Engineering Fundamentals, Radiation Protection, and Nuclear Reactor Physics. Advanced courses include Nuclear Reactor Design, Corrosion for Engineers, Radioactive Waste Management Design, Nuclear Plant Operation, Reactor Control, and Nuclear Power Plant Systems Design. Students also explore specialized areas like Shielding Design, Nuclear Fuel Cycles, Nuclear Materials, Principles of Fusion Energy, and medical and environmental applications of radiation through courses like Medical Imaging, Environmental Effects of Radiation, and Radiation Detection and Measurement. The curriculum is enhanced by simulation, modeling, and integrated lab experiences, culminating in a two-part Capstone Design project. With additional coverage of topics such as hydrogen fuel cells, plant chemistry, safety design, ethics, and risk analysis, graduates are thoroughly prepared for careers in reactor design, operation, safety, radiation protection, and regulatory roles.
