COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Rights and Advocacy program in Legal Studies offers a diverse and comprehensive curriculum that prepares students to understand and critically engage with the legal system, human rights frameworks, and mechanisms of social justice. Core courses such as Foundations of Legal Studies, Legal Theory, and Legal Research Methods provide foundational knowledge, while specialized courses like Canadian Human Rights Law, International Law, Indigenous Peoples, Law and the State in Canada, and Race, Ethnicity and the Law explore how law interacts with various identities and global contexts. Students examine diverse legal domains including Public Law, Private Law, Criminal Law, Labour and Employment Law, Family Law, and emerging areas like Law and Technology and Cybercrime. Courses such as Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Family Mediation, and Human Rights Mediation equip students with practical skills for dispute resolution, while electives like Censorship and Freedom of Expression and Intellectual Property broaden their understanding of contemporary legal challenges. With additional focus areas like Immigration and Refugee Law, Disability and the Law, and Law and Globalization, the program encourages critical thinking about equity, access, and power. Students can also complete an honours thesis, practicum, or integrative project, gaining hands-on experience for careers in law, advocacy, policy, or further legal education.
