ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Ontario Tech University, legally known as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, is a public research university located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Established in 2002 through the passage of Bill 109 by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, the university was part of a provincial initiative to expand post-secondary education opportunities. The main campus, situated on about 160 hectares in northern Oshawa, has grown steadily since its founding, with several buildings constructed between 2002 and 2004. The campus incorporates sustainable features, including a geothermal heating and cooling system beneath the central quadrangle. Ontario Tech also operates a secondary campus in downtown Oshawa, opened in 2011, which expanded the university’s presence in the city. Over the years, the institution has invested in specialized facilities such as the Automotive Centre of Excellence, the Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre, and the Clean Energy Research Laboratory. The university also renovated the historic Regent Theatre in 2010 to serve as a lecture venue. Ontario Tech emphasizes programs in science, technology, and research, offering both graduate and postgraduate opportunities across seven academic faculties. The student population has grown significantly since the first cohort of 947 students in 2003, reaching approximately 10,100 undergraduates and 970 graduate students by 2021. The alumni network has expanded to include more than 25,500 graduates as of 2022. The university underwent a rebranding in 2018, adopting the name Ontario Tech University, although its legal name remained unchanged. A further milestone was reached with the construction of Shawenjigewining Hall, which officially opened in 2021, adding to the university’s modern infrastructure. Ontario Tech continues to play a vital role in the Durham Region by combining innovative research, academic growth, and community engagement while maintaining a strong focus on science, technology, and applied learning.
