ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Olds College of Agriculture and Technology is a well-recognized public post-secondary institution located in Olds, Alberta. Established in 1913, the college began as the Olds School of Agriculture and Home Economics, with W.J. Elliot serving as its first principal. Its roots, however, go back to 1911, when it was first operated as a provincially funded demonstration farm. From its earliest years, the college focused on offering practical training to students in areas such as field husbandry, farm mechanics, and domestic science. These programs were designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to the agricultural sector and rural communities. Over time, the college expanded both its academic offerings and its role in the province. A significant administrative change took place when the governance of the institution shifted from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Advanced Education, aligning it more closely with other post-secondary institutions in Alberta. The college has maintained a steady presence in agricultural education, research, and applied technology, ensuring its relevance to both students and industry partners. During the 2020–2021 academic year, Olds College reported a total student enrollment of 5,446, reflecting its capacity to serve a diverse student body. It is also a member of the Alberta Rural Development Network, demonstrating its commitment to rural growth and sustainability. In 2022, the college underwent a major rebranding, adopting the name Olds College of Agriculture and Technology to better reflect its focus on combining traditional agricultural education with modern technological advancements. This evolution highlights the college’s enduring mission of supporting innovation in agriculture while equipping graduates with the skills to address the changing needs of the industry. Today, the institution continues to be a cornerstone of agricultural education in Alberta and beyond.
