COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Writing and Publishing is structured over two years, combining foundational, intermediate, and applied coursework in English literature, creative writing, publishing, communications, and marketing. In Year 1, students build core skills by selecting two English literature courses from options such as Critical Writing and Reading: Poetry and Drama, Short Fiction and the Novel, or Narrative. They also complete two introductory creative writing courses, Introduction to Creative Writing I and II, alongside two first-year publishing courses, Applied Publishing Skills and Design Foundations. Foundational communications knowledge is gained through two courses chosen from Introduction to Communications, Mass Communication, Journalism Fundamentals, or Digital Media, while business acumen is introduced through Marketing. Students also take one elective to explore additional interests. Year 2 deepens expertise with advanced and intermediate courses. Publication design is addressed through Introduction to Publication Design and Advanced Publication Design, while applied English courses such as Small Press Publishing in Canada and Applied Publishing Studies: Introduction to Book Arts develop practical skills. Students also take one literature course from a wide range of intermediate topics, a production-focused publishing course, Pre-production for Publishing, a web design course, Web Development for Publishing, a professional editing course, and two intermediate creative writing workshops, including poetry, fiction, drama, creative non-fiction, or screenwriting. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with both creative and technical competencies essential for modern publishing careers.
