COURSE CURRICULUM

The Therapist Assistant Diploma at Okanagan College is a two-year, full-time program designed to prepare students to work as assistants to Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Recreational Therapists. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in human anatomy and physiology, psychology, communication, group process, and disease and disability, alongside introductory courses in occupational, physical, and recreation therapy practice. Students also complete preparatory coursework for practicum experiences, with placements providing practical, hands-on learning in real-world settings. The second year advances technical and clinical skills through courses in gross anatomy, kinesiology, psychiatry, advanced client care, and therapeutic modalities, while deepening competencies in occupational and physical therapy practice. The curriculum integrates preceptorships, practicum placements, and a capstone project to ensure students can apply their learning in professional environments and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and patient care skills. Students also take foundational English courses to strengthen communication abilities, which are essential for effective collaboration with clients, families, and healthcare teams. The program is nationally accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program, ensuring graduates meet recognized professional standards and are prepared to enter the workforce as competent, versatile, and client-centered therapist assistants.
