COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation option of the Kinesiology Diploma at Okanagan College is designed for students interested in completing a two-year diploma to become recreation program leaders who promote physical literacy and lifespan wellbeing in the community. In the first year, students complete foundational courses including Health, Fitness and Lifestyle, Human Anatomy I for Kinesiology, Human Physiology I for Kinesiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, University Writing, Exercise Prescription for Health, Human Anatomy and Physiology II, Motor Learning and Control, Health and Human Nutrition, and Physical Literacy for Life. In the second year, students advance to specialized courses such as Exercise Physiology, Science of Strength and Conditioning, Physical Activity in Canadian Society, Professionalism in Fitness and Recreation, Growth and Motor Development, Health, Policy and Canadian Society, and Community Program Planning, along with elective credits each semester, allowing students to tailor their learning to individual interests. Recommended electives include Biomechanics, Management Principles, Marketing, Financial Accounting, and courses in psychology, sociology, anthropology, Indigenous studies, or natural sciences, providing both breadth and depth in their education. This program equips students with the knowledge, practical skills, and leadership abilities required to design, implement, and manage recreation programs, while fostering lifelong health, wellness, and engagement in physical activity for diverse populations.
