COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fitness option of the Kinesiology Diploma at Okanagan College is a two-year program designed for students aiming to become fitness program leaders, such as certified personal trainers, and to support community health through physical activity. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in human health, anatomy, physiology, and exercise psychology with courses including Health, Fitness and Lifestyle, Human Anatomy I for Kinesiology, Human Physiology I for Kinesiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, University Writing, Exercise Prescription for Health, Human Anatomy and Physiology II, Health and Human Nutrition, Motor Learning and Control, and three elective credits chosen from business, kinesiology, arts, or sciences. The second year builds on these skills with more specialized courses such as Exercise Physiology, Science of Strength and Conditioning, Health Behaviour Change, Professionalism in Fitness and Recreation, Growth and Motor Development, Health, Policy and Canadian Society, Fitness Testing and Exercise Prescription, and Introduction to Athletic Injuries, along with three elective credits per semester. Recommended electives include Biomechanics, Community Program Planning, Management Principles, Marketing, Financial Accounting, and courses in psychology, sociology, anthropology, indigenous studies, biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics. This program equips students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to lead fitness programs, design effective exercise plans, and promote health and wellness in diverse community settings.
