COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Information Systems Diploma at Okanagan College is a two-year program designed to equip students with the technical expertise and practical experience necessary for careers in software development, systems analysis, database management, and IT solutions design. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through courses in technical communication, computer programming, computer science fundamentals, mathematics for IT, and operating systems, while also gaining an introduction to networks, telecommunications, and systems analysis and design. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, allowing students to build problem-solving, analytical, and programming skills. During the second year, students advance their knowledge with specialized courses in web development using LAMP, data structures, object-oriented systems analysis and design, client-side web systems, database management, graphical user interface programming, operating systems, and project management, alongside a major applied project. Integral to the program are multiple co-op work terms, spanning the second year, which provide hands-on, real-world experience in professional IT environments, enabling students to apply their technical skills, work collaboratively in teams, and develop workplace competencies. Elective courses further allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Graduates of the program leave with a strong technical foundation, practical project experience, and professional readiness for careers in computing, software development, and technology-focused business solutions.
