COURSE CURRICULUM

Animation diploma program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive education in drawing, design, and the principles and techniques of traditional and digital character animation. In the first semester of year one, students complete courses including Life Drawing I, Animation Principles I, Layout and Design I, Character Design I, Animation History, and Communication Fundamentals for Animation, which together build a strong artistic and theoretical foundation. The second semester continues this development with Life Drawing II, Animation Principles II, Layout and Design II, Character Design II, and Storyboarding I, offering students more advanced skills in both technical and creative aspects of animation. Between the first and second years, there is an optional Co-op Work Term during the summer months, allowing students to gain valuable industry experience subject to availability. In year two, the third semester advances the curriculum with Life Drawing III, Animation Principles III, Layout and Design III, Character Design III, and Storyboarding III, further refining students’ abilities and preparing them for professional work. The final semester focuses on Life Drawing IV, Animation Principles IV, Demo Reel Production, and Career Communication and Strategy for Animation, equipping students with the necessary tools to create a professional demo reel and to effectively present themselves in the animation industry. This program balances artistic skills, industry techniques, and applied technology, with classes taught by industry professionals in state-of-the-art facilities, fostering creativity and technical dexterity. The curriculum also includes important subjects like animation history and communication, ensuring students are well-rounded and understand the broader context of their work. Graduates leave the program prepared not only as skilled animators but also with strong communication and career strategy skills, ready to pursue opportunities in 2D and 3D animation, computer games, multimedia, web design, television, and feature films, particularly within British Columbia’s growing entertainment industry.
