ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP), formerly known as Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC), is a publicly funded institution located in northwestern Alberta, Canada. Established in 1966 as Grande Prairie Junior College under the leadership of Dr. Henry Anderson, the college welcomed its first cohort of 101 charter students in 1967. Four years later, the institution was renamed Grande Prairie Regional College, and by 1974, classes were offered in a uniquely designed facility created by renowned Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal. Over the decades, NWP has expanded its academic and community presence, most notably in 2009 when Fairview College was integrated, leading to the establishment of two campuses located 115 kilometers apart in Grande Prairie and Fairview. The institution also operates the National Bee Diagnostic Centre in Beaverlodge, further demonstrating its commitment to applied research and specialized studies. Today, Northwestern Polytechnic is recognized as the largest post-secondary institution in northern Alberta, enrolling over 2,800 students from across Canada and abroad. It provides a wide range of educational opportunities, including certificate, diploma, apprenticeship, and undergraduate programs through its four dedicated schools: Applied Science and Technology, Business, Health, and Skilled Trades. This diversity of programming reflects its mission to meet the varied needs of learners while supporting regional workforce development. Beyond academics, the institution has worked to strengthen its role as a community hub, attracting learners and fostering innovation in specialized fields. With a history spanning more than 50 years, Northwestern Polytechnic has established itself as a significant contributor to education and training in Alberta, offering accessible pathways to higher learning and skills development while maintaining its regional roots and commitment to student success.
