COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Arts Degree (Health Studies) at Northern Lights College is a two-year program requiring a minimum of 62 credits (1,102.5 hours), typically completed over four semesters. It provides foundational coursework for students planning to pursue health-related degree programs, particularly the Northern Baccalaureate Nursing Program (NBNP) at the University of Northern British Columbia. In Semester One, students take BIOL 111 (Anatomy and Physiology I), ENGL 100 (Academic Writing), a statistics course (MATH 104 or SOSC 207), PSYC 101 (Introduction to Psychology I), and either PHIL 111 (Contemporary Moral Issues) or WGST 100 (Women and Gender Studies). Semester Two includes ANTH 102 (Cultural and Social Anthropology II), BIOL 112 (Anatomy and Physiology II), HSCI 100 (Introduction to Health Sciences), an English literature course (ENGL 105, 111, or 112), and either PSYC 102 or SOCI 101. Semester Three features ANTH 203 (Contemporary Canadian Native Peoples), ANTH 204 (Medical Anthropology), HADM 310 (Organizational Structure of the Canadian Health Care System), and a 200-level elective transferable to UNBC. Semester Four includes BIOL 103 or BIOL 205 (Medical Microbiology), SOCI 204 or PSYC 235 (Family Studies), and three additional 200-level electives transferable to UNBC. The program must be completed within four years and allows for part-time study.
