COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Arts Degree (Education) is a two-year program structured into two main phases: the Pre-Education Certificate in Year 1 and the completion of the Associate Degree in Year 2, totaling a minimum of 62 credits. In the first year, students are required to complete foundational courses including ENGL 100 (Academic Writing), and one of ENGL 105, 111, or 112 (Non-Fiction, Poetry and Drama, or Prose Fiction), along with HIST 103 (Canada Pre-Confederation) and HIST 104 (Canada Post-Confederation). MATH 190 (Principles of Mathematics for Teachers) and GEOG 103 (Regional Geography of Canada) are also mandatory. Additionally, students must choose four electives (12–14 credits) from a combination of lab science and arts/science courses. Option A requires one lab science course and three arts/science courses, while Option B requires two lab science courses and two arts/science courses. Students intending to enter the AHCOTE program should ensure that their lab science courses meet SFU’s requirements, such as taking both GEOG 112 and 114 or PHYS 103 and 104. In the second year, core education courses include EDUC 100 (Questions and Issues in Education), EDUC 240 (Social Issues in Education), and EDUC 252 (Introduction to Reflective Practice). Students must also complete a computer science course—either CPSC 100 or 101—and one Indigenous-focused course, selected from FNST 100, FNST 102, ANTH 203, or HIST 209. In addition, students are required to take four 200-level arts electives (12 credits), with PSYC 211 recommended though it requires PSYC 101 and 102 as prerequisites, and one open elective in either arts or sciences (3 credits). This comprehensive curriculum is designed to fulfill the academic prerequisites for entry into teacher education pathways such as AHCOTE while also offering a broad and transferable foundation in the liberal arts and sciences.
