COURSE CURRICULUM

The Post Degree Diploma in Environmental Management consists of a comprehensive blend of required courses, closed electives, management electives, and open electives, totaling approximately 60 credits. Required courses (13 in total) focus on foundational knowledge and essential skills in environmental science, project management, economics, Indigenous studies, communication, and geographic information systems. These include BIOL 125 (Basic Ecology), GEOG 112, GEOG 250, and GEOG 260 for environmental foundations; MGMT 104, MGMT 290/MATH 104, MGMT 450, and MGMT 454 for business and project management; and ENGL 110, ECON 105, COMM 301 or PSYC 224, and POLI 200 to round out communication and policy knowledge. Students must also choose between FNST 100 or FNST 102 for an Indigenous perspectives component. In addition, students select three courses from a list of closed electives, which offer specialized content in areas such as land reclamation, water resource management, and forest ecology—examples include LAND 255, WATR 260, or FRST 225. For the management stream, three additional electives must be chosen from business-focused courses such as MGMT 204 (Human Resource Management), MGMT 302 (Business Sustainability), or MGMT 430 (Business Ethics). Finally, students complete two open electives from a range of courses offered at Northern Lights College. While students have flexibility in this category, recommended options include ENGL 230 (Technical Writing), CPSC 101 (Computing), or SOIL 117 (Soil Science), allowing learners to tailor their experience to personal interests or specific career goals. This diploma provides a multidisciplinary education in environmental management, combining practical field-based skills with managerial and policy expertise to prepare graduates for dynamic careers in the environmental sector.
