COURSE CURRICULUM

The Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation program consists of two main components: HMTF102 Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation (910 contact hours) and HMTF150 Foundation Work Practicum (60 contact hours). HMTF102 introduces students to four key trade paths: Truck and Transport Mechanic, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Diesel Engine Mechanic, and Transport Trailer Technician. The course covers fundamental skills in servicing and repairing brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, suspension, steering, heating and ventilation, air conditioning, and trailer maintenance. Students also learn safe work practices and the proper use of shop tools, gaining a strong foundation in all aspects of heavy mechanical repair. HMTF150 is a 60-hour unpaid practicum where students gain hands-on experience by working alongside professionals in their preferred trade area. Practicum placements expose students to daily duties and operating terminology, providing practical insight into the industry and reinforcing their learning objectives. This foundation program equips students with essential knowledge and skills, preparing them to advance to Heavy Mechanical Apprentice Level 2 and pursue careers in various heavy mechanical trades.
