COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) program at Northern Lights College consists of a total of 745 contact hours, typically completed over 31 to 34 weeks of full-time study. The curriculum is structured around ten core courses designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical skills. These include HCAT 110 (Common Health Challenges – 115 hours), HCAT 111 (Lifestyle and Choices – 30 hours), HCAT 112 (Interpersonal Communications – 50 hours), HCAT 113 (Introduction to Practice – 30 hours), HCAT 123 (Concepts for Practice – 70 hours), and HCAT 124 (Personal Care and Assistance – 120 hours). Specialized knowledge in supporting individuals with cognitive or mental challenges is covered in HCAT 125 (60 hours). Clinical and hands-on learning are integral parts of the program, with three practicum components: HCAT 126 (Practice Experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care 1 – 150 hours), HCAT 127 (Multi-Level and/or Complex Care 2 – 60 hours), and HCAT 128 (Practice Experience in Home Support, Assisted Living and/or Group Home Setting – 60 hours). Part-time study options are available, though completion will take longer. This program provides a comprehensive foundation for entry-level roles in health care and a pathway to further nursing education.
