COURSE CURRICULUM

Northern College’s Veterinary Technician diploma program is a comprehensive two-year curriculum that combines in-depth theoretical instruction with hands-on clinical training. In Semester 1, students build foundational knowledge in animal anatomy and physiology, clinical studies, applied animal behavior, and laboratory procedures. They also begin developing technical skills through kennel duty, necropsy lab, and clinical exercises, while gaining insight into communication and workplace readiness with courses like Managing for Success and Client Relations. Semester 2 deepens clinical competencies with advanced lab techniques, animal nutrition, radiology, dentistry, and pharmacology, and includes the first field placement to provide real-world experience in a veterinary setting. Indigenous Culture & Awareness is included to broaden cultural sensitivity in professional environments. By Semester 3, students are immersed in surgical techniques, radiology, pharmaceutical principles, and laboratory animal care. They participate in specialized training in large animal medicine, veterinary technician surgery, and registered veterinary technician exam preparation. Employment preparation and management technology courses are included to support professional development. Semester 4 focuses on advanced surgical and clinical practices, dentistry, radiology, wildlife and exotic animal care, and a final field placement that immerses students in a professional veterinary environment. Throughout the program, kennel duty continues to reinforce responsibility and routine care. The curriculum emphasizes ethical practices, critical thinking, and effective communication while fostering proficiency in core veterinary procedures like diagnostics, anesthesia, radiography, and patient care. With multiple field placements and ongoing skill reinforcement, students graduate ready to write the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and pursue registration with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT). This program equips graduates with the technical expertise and compassionate professionalism to thrive in various animal healthcare settings, including clinics, research labs, shelters, farms, and zoos, making them valuable contributors to the well-being of animals and public health.
