COURSE CURRICULUM
Northern College’s two-year Paramedic program provides a rigorous, hands-on education designed to prepare students for fast-paced careers in emergency medical services. In Semester 1, students study human anatomy and physiology, crisis communication, Indigenous culture and awareness, and develop foundational patient care and assessment skills through both theory and lab courses. Additional courses like Fitness and Wellness I and The Prehospital Environment ensure students are physically and mentally prepared for the demands of the field. Semester 2 builds on this knowledge with courses in advanced patient care, pharmacology, and mental health in EMS. Students also complete a hospital clinical placement and engage in community service learning, gaining real-world exposure to interprofessional healthcare environments. The curriculum emphasizes leadership, communication, and professionalism through courses like Professional Development and Leadership and Fitness and Wellness II. In Semester 3, students further refine their assessment and intervention skills through intensive theory and lab sessions, a practicum across varied healthcare settings, and courses in pathophysiology and fitness maintenance. They also begin training with Ministry of Health EHSB protocols, including IV therapy and defibrillation. Semester 4 focuses on transition to practice through case study analysis and an in-depth, 448-hour Ambulance Field Consolidation placement under the supervision of professional paramedics. A dedicated AEMCA review course supports students in preparing for Ontario’s Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant certification exam. Throughout the program, students gain experience in high-fidelity simulation labs and real-world clinical environments, including 911 dispatch, emergency departments, and long-term care. The program balances academic rigor with physical training and field experience to produce highly skilled, confident, and adaptable paramedics ready to deliver critical care in high-stakes situations. With strong industry partnerships and experienced faculty, Northern College ensures graduates are job-ready, resilient, and well-equipped to handle the complexities of modern pre-hospital care.
