COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mining Engineering Technician program at Northern College Haileybury School of Mines offers a comprehensive four-semester curriculum designed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills for the mining industry. In Semester 1, foundational courses cover general chemistry, professional communications, health and safety, Indigenous culture and awareness, computer applications with Excel, mathematics, mineralogy and geology, and an introduction to mining principles and terminology. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with workplace communications, computer-aided drafting (AutoCAD I), advanced mathematics, mineral processing, surveying principles, mineralogy and geology II, physics, surface mining, and hands-on mining field schools focusing on surveying and mineralogy. Semester 3 deepens technical expertise through advanced AutoCAD, mathematics, underground mining principles, surveying techniques, safety and loss control, mineralogy and geology IV, and ground control including rock mechanics and support systems. Semester 4 emphasizes applied skills and management with courses in statistics, effective supervision, environmental principles, advanced underground surveying and mineral processing field schools, extended mineralogy and geology studies, underground mine design using advanced CAD and software, and mine ventilation studies. The program integrates theoretical learning with practical, hands-on field experiences and software applications relevant to modern mining operations. This approach ensures graduates are prepared to design, monitor, and optimize mining processes while adhering to safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. The program also emphasizes communication, leadership, and professionalism essential for workplace success.
