COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Technician – Industrial Millwright program at Northern College provides a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience across four semesters, preparing students for careers maintaining and repairing industrial machinery. In Semester 1, students gain foundational knowledge in electrical and electronics fundamentals, communications, health and safety, Indigenous culture and awareness, and mathematics and precision measurement. They also begin practical training in machining, technical drawing, welding, and industrial safety protocols. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with applied communication, more advanced mathematics, and technical drawing using AutoCAD. Students dive deeper into the core of the trade with fluid power systems, bearings and lubrication, power transmission systems, and machining techniques, while refining welding skills. In Semester 3, students continue developing their technical expertise with courses in electrical controls, advanced fluid power, machining, compressors, pumps, valves, and precision measurement. A general education elective broadens their knowledge beyond their trade, while Welding III introduces more advanced techniques. In the final semester, students explore entrepreneurship and business planning while solidifying practical knowledge through Mechanical Theory and Practical—a capstone course that includes a two-week unpaid placement or in-shop job simulation. They also deepen their expertise in machining, material handling systems, and welding. A final general education elective completes the program, ensuring graduates are well-rounded and industry-ready.
