COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education program provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical learning and hands-on practice, preparing students to support the development of children from birth to age 12. In the first semester, students explore foundational concepts in early childhood education, including child development, responsive relationships, play-based environments, and professional communication. A key highlight is ECE Lab 1, where students gain direct experience designing and implementing play-based activities. Semester two deepens this learning with courses like Outdoor and Nature Play, Creative Curriculum Design, and Preparation for Placement, building practical skills for working in diverse early learning environments. ECE Lab 2 furthers students’ engagement by allowing them greater responsibility in applying their knowledge in real-world settings. Students also begin developing professional competencies and understanding workplace communication. In semester three, students explore inclusive practices, health and nutrition, and diversity in Canadian society. Courses like Inclusive Practice and Working With Diversity emphasize equity and cultural safety, while electives and Indigenous Culture & Awareness broaden their understanding of social systems and reconciliation. The final semester features a 572-hour fieldwork placement across three settings—infant/toddler, preschool, and school-age—offering vital experience with different age groups. This is supported by the ECE Fieldwork Seminar, where students reflect on their experiences and develop as entry-level professionals. Throughout the program, students engage with community partnerships and practice planning, observing, and documenting children’s growth while fostering environments that support curiosity, resilience, and meaningful learning. The curriculum integrates frameworks like ELECT and Universal Design for Learning to ensure inclusive and developmentally appropriate practice. With a strong emphasis on responsive relationships, professionalism, and reflective practice, graduates are fully prepared to enter the field as capable, confident early childhood educators ready to nurture children's development and well-being in a variety of educational and care settings.
