COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering Technician program is structured over four semesters to provide a comprehensive foundation in civil engineering principles and practical skills. In the first semester, students begin with fundamental courses such as Methods and Materials I/Detailing, Professional Communications, Health and Safety, and Introduction to Physics, alongside practical skills in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) I and Surveying Principles I, complemented by Mathematics I to build essential analytical abilities. The second semester advances technical knowledge through Statics, Municipal Design I, Engineering Materials and Testing, and CAD II for Civil Engineering, while reinforcing communication skills with Communications in the Workplace and offering cultural awareness with Indigenous Culture & Awareness. Mathematics II and Municipal Engineering further develop problem-solving capabilities and sector-specific expertise. The third semester introduces specialized topics like Estimating I, Highways I, Municipal Design II, and Strength of Materials I, alongside advanced mathematics including Calculus, and Plane Survey I for fieldwork. A general education elective ensures well-rounded learning. The final semester consolidates skills with Project Documentation, Highways II, Sustainable Practices, and the Ontario Building Code for Civil applications. Strength of Materials II – Civil and Statistics deepen technical and analytical skills, while GIS introduces geographic information systems critical for modern civil engineering projects. Another general education elective broadens perspectives. Together, this curriculum balances theory, technical drafting, surveying, materials science, and project management, preparing students to excel in diverse civil engineering roles and providing a pathway for further study or immediate entry into the workforce.
