COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Resources program at Northern offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for a successful career in HR management. In the first semester, students are introduced to foundational concepts such as financial accounting, human resources recruitment and selection strategies, business fundamentals, professional communication, computer applications including Microsoft Excel, business math, and marketing principles. These courses lay the groundwork for understanding the integral role HR plays within a business context. The second semester builds on this foundation with courses in financial accounting II focusing on assets and liabilities, organizational behaviour emphasizing management and group dynamics, microeconomics, workplace communication skills, Indigenous culture and awareness, advanced business math including compound interest and annuities, and marketing II where students develop practical marketing plans. The third semester advances students’ knowledge with managerial accounting, compensation and benefits administration, labour relations and collective bargaining, human rights in employment, macroeconomics, and occupational health and safety. This semester also includes a general education elective to broaden the learning experience. In the final semester, students deepen their expertise with courses in HR planning and development, business law covering contracts and intellectual property, recruitment and selection linked to organizational strategy, training program design and delivery incorporating adult learning theories, and HR analytics. Another general education elective complements the technical courses. Throughout the program, students develop practical skills in communication, leadership, strategic decision-making, and legal compliance, all essential for supporting organizational goals and managing diverse workforces effectively. The curriculum aligns with the requirements for the Certified Human Resources Professional designation, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for professional certification and leadership roles in the HR field.
