COURSE CURRICULUM

Northern’s Pre-Service Firefighter program is structured across three semesters, offering a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a successful firefighting career. In Semester 1, students develop foundational skills in professional communications and Indigenous culture and awareness, alongside specialized courses such as Fitness for Firefighters I, Emergency Patient Care, Fire Behaviour and Building Construction, and Firefighter I theory and practical skills aligned with NFPA 1001 Level I standards. This semester emphasizes physical fitness, emergency patient assessment, fire dynamics, and basic firefighting techniques, including personal protective equipment, forcible entry, hose operations, and scene preservation. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with courses like Life Safety Education, Technical Rescue & Maintenance, Fitness for Firefighters II, and Advanced Emergency Patient Care, deepening students’ understanding of patient stabilization and trauma management. Additional training includes Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Incident Management Systems, and Firefighter II theory and practical skills, covering foam firefighting, liquid and gas fires, and community risk reduction, meeting NFPA 1001 Level II requirements. Semester 3 focuses on intensive practical application, with students undertaking Practical Fire & Rescue Evolutions that integrate fire ground operations, patient care, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue in realistic scenarios. The program culminates with Technical Rescue Practical Testing, ensuring students demonstrate proficiency in all technical rescue skills learned. Throughout the program, students benefit from hands-on learning in state-of-the-art facilities, preparing them physically and mentally for the challenges of firefighting, patient care, and emergency response. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to enter the firefighting workforce confidently and competently.
