COURSE CURRICULUM

Northern’s Personal Support Worker (PSW) program spans two semesters, combining essential theory with hands-on clinical experience. In Semester 1, students build foundational skills through courses like Professional Communications, Indigenous Culture & Awareness, and Human Relationships, focusing on effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and therapeutic client interactions. Core PSW courses cover practical skills in infection control, hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and basic assessments, preparing students for clinical practice. They also study common health challenges, PSW roles and responsibilities within the Canadian healthcare system, and human anatomy and physiology, all emphasizing safe, client-centered care.Semester 2 deepens understanding with courses on Mental Health and Cognitive Challenges, End of Life Care, and advanced PSW Practice, where students learn to assist with medications, continence, nutrition, and household management. The program culminates in extensive clinical placements: 110–120 hours in a long-term care setting under supervision and a 240-hour preceptorship where students independently demonstrate their competence as PSWs. These practical experiences enable students to apply knowledge, establish therapeutic relationships, and work effectively within healthcare teams. Overall, this comprehensive program equips graduates with the skills, professionalism, and compassion needed to support clients in diverse care environments.
