COURSE CURRICULUM

Medical Laboratory Technician program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for successful careers in clinical laboratory settings. In the first semester, students develop foundational skills in professional communication, specimen collection, and clinical laboratory techniques, focusing on patient interaction, safety protocols, and proper handling of biological specimens. They gain knowledge in applied anatomy and physiology, clinical data management, and chemistry, with hands-on practice in ECG administration and Holter monitor setup. The second semester deepens these skills with advanced specimen collection techniques, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, immunohematology, microbiology, cytology, histology, and laboratory administration, emphasizing quality assurance and effective lab management. Students explore legal and ethical issues related to specimen handling, ensuring professionalism and patient safety. The Indigenous Culture and Awareness course fosters understanding and respect for Indigenous peoples, supporting reconciliation efforts within healthcare environments. The final semester offers an extended clinical practice placement where students apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings under professional supervision, developing proficiency in specimen collection, processing, and teamwork essential for smooth transition into the workplace. Throughout the program, students learn to manage the challenges of working in high-pressure medical environments, including patient trauma and mental health complexities. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to write the Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician exams with MLPAO or CSMLS, positioning them for rewarding roles in hospitals, research labs, and clinics. The program’s accreditation by Canada/Equal ensures that it meets rigorous national standards for health professional education, equipping students with both the technical expertise and professional demeanor necessary for success in the healthcare field.
