COURSE CURRICULUM

Northern College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program,provides students with a comprehensive and immersive education that spans eight semesters and integrates both theoretical and practical learning. Beginning with foundational courses in anatomy, physiology, psychology, communication, and the nursing profession, students are gradually introduced to core nursing concepts, relational practice, and clinical placements that start as early as the first semester. The curriculum covers health and healing across the lifespan, nursing praxis, professional development, and community health, with increasing complexity each term. Specialized courses focus on areas such as microbiology, clinical chemistry, pharmacology, Indigenous health perspectives, nutrition, and psychopathology, preparing students to deliver holistic and culturally competent care. Nursing praxis courses are central throughout, offering hands-on learning and simulated care scenarios to enhance critical thinking, clinical judgment, and ethical decision-making. Relational practice and professional growth courses support personal and professional development, emphasizing communication, leadership, health equity, and collaboration within interdisciplinary teams. Inquiry and research components are integrated through multiple semesters, encouraging evidence-informed practice and critical appraisal of nursing literature. In the final year, students consolidate their learning and leadership capabilities through advanced clinical placements, preparing them to transition confidently into their roles as novice practitioners. This well-rounded program is designed to equip graduates with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to provide high-quality nursing care and make meaningful contributions to the healthcare system.
