The Veterinary Medical Assistant certificate program at NAIT is designed to provide a comprehensive mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills across two terms, preparing students for effective support roles in veterinary settings. In Term 1, students begin with ANBH1140 Animal Behaviour and Handling, where they learn techniques for safely and humanely managing a variety of animals. IPAE1110 Veterinary Communication Principles focuses on developing clear and compassionate communication skills essential for interacting with pet owners, colleagues, and veterinary professionals. MRMG1170 Medical Records Management introduces students to the accurate documentation and organization of patient information, an important administrative responsibility. VTMA1112 Technical Assisting teaches foundational clinical support skills necessary for assisting veterinarians and technologists during procedures. VTMA1161 Fundamental Animal Anatomy and Physiology provides students with a solid understanding of animal body systems, which is critical for effective clinical support. Term 2 advances students’ skills with IPAE1210 Veterinary Communication Practice, allowing them to apply communication techniques in realistic scenarios. VTMA1210 Veterinary Procedures Support covers the practical aspects of assisting in various veterinary procedures. VTMA1231 Veterinary Nutritional Products and VTMA1232 Veterinary Pharmaceutical Product Management teach students about the products and medications commonly used in animal care. VTMA1260 Common Animal Diseases and Conditions equips students with knowledge to recognize and understand typical health issues affecting animals. The program culminates in VTMA1290 Clinical Placement (WIL), a hands-on work-integrated learning experience that enables students to apply their skills in real veterinary clinics or shelters, ensuring they graduate ready for the workforce.
