COURSE CURRICULUM

The HVACR Technician certificate program at NAIT is structured across three terms, combining theoretical instruction with practical training to prepare students for careers in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industries. In Term 1, students begin with COMM1150 Professional Communications, which builds essential workplace communication skills. ELEC1135 Electrical Fundamentals introduces the basics of electrical theory and applications relevant to HVACR systems. HVAC1110 Refrigeration Fundamentals covers the principles of refrigeration, including thermodynamics and the refrigeration cycle. HVAC1120 HVACR Tools and Safety focuses on the proper use of industry-standard hand and power tools, along with safety protocols. HVAC1145 Introduction to HVAC provides an overview of HVAC systems and components. Term 2 expands on this foundation with ELEC1245 Electrical Systems and Controls, which explores control systems and wiring practices. HVAC1210 Refrigeration Processes and Components dives deeper into system components and their functions. HVAC1225 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Installations teaches installation techniques for residential and commercial systems. HVAC1255 Introduction to Building Automation Systems introduces students to digital controls and automation used in modern HVACR systems. HVAC1265 Gas-Fired Heating covers the fundamentals of gas heating equipment, including operation and maintenance. In Term 3, HVAC1290 HVACR Industry Field Placement provides real-world experience in a professional setting, allowing students to apply their classroom and lab training on-site. This practical exposure enhances their readiness for employment and supports their progression toward apprenticeship certification. Altogether, the program builds the technical and hands-on skills needed to enter and advance in the HVACR industry.
