COURSE CURRICULUM

The Dental Assisting certificate program at NAIT is structured across three terms, offering a well-rounded mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to prepare students for immediate employment in dental practices. In Term 1, students begin with DEAS1010 Dental Anatomy and Records, where they learn the foundational structures of the oral cavity and how to accurately chart and maintain dental records. DEAS1011 Professional Practice and Patient Care introduces the principles of patient interaction, ethics, and professionalism within dental settings. DEAS1012 Radiography I covers the basics of dental radiographic techniques, safety protocols, and image interpretation. DEAS1013 Clinic I provides hands-on training in a simulated clinical environment, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills under instructor supervision. Term 2 builds on this foundation with DEAS1021 Preventive Dentistry, focusing on oral hygiene education and disease prevention strategies. DEAS1022 Radiography II advances students' radiographic knowledge with more complex imaging procedures. DEAS1023 Clinic II continues the development of practical chairside skills, emphasizing increased proficiency and confidence in patient care. In Term 3, students complete DEAS1030 Field Placement, a real-world practicum in a dental office where they apply their learning in a professional setting. This immersive experience allows students to work alongside practicing dental teams, gaining insight into the day-to-day operations and expectations of the industry. By the end of the program, graduates are well-prepared to assist in a wide range of dental procedures, manage patient interactions, and contribute to the smooth operation of a dental clinic.
