COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Sociology – Applied Social Research (Thesis Option) at Nipissing University requires the successful completion of 21 credits. All students must complete the following core courses: SOCI 5454 Thesis Research Project (12 credits), SOCI 5106 Advanced Sociological Theory (3 credits), SOCI 5216 Research Design (3 credits), and either SOCI 5217 Quantitative Analysis or SOCI 5417 Qualitative Analysis (3 credits). In addition to the core requirements, students must complete six additional credits selected from a range of specialized and elective courses. These include options such as SOCI 5505 Thesis Research Practicum, SOCI 5517 Program and Policy Evaluation, SOCI 5516 and SOCI 5526 Special Topics I and II, SOCI 5617 and SOCI 5627 Directed Studies I and II, SOCI 5227 Science, Technology and Environment, SOCI 5206 Determinants of Population Change, and SOCI 5547 Education and Inequality. This structure is designed to provide a strong foundation in sociological theory and research while allowing students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest. The thesis project enables students to undertake substantial original research, often involving community, government, or non-profit partners, preparing them for advanced academic work or professional careers in research, policy, and applied social sciences.
