COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in History program offers students a comprehensive exploration of historical debates and methodologies through a variety of seminars across four fields of concentration: International, Gender, Canadian, and European history, with a seminar in each field available annually. Designed to be completed within one year, the program includes coursework and a Major Research Paper (MRP), which allows students to engage deeply with primary research and the major historiography of their chosen topic. The program requires students to complete 24 credits, including HIST 5006 and 5007 (Methods in Historical Research I and II), 12 credits of MA seminar courses chosen from the four fields, or alternatively one Directed Studies course, and HIST 5995 for the Major Research Paper. The seminars cover Canadian, European, International, and Gender history at the 5000 level, each worth three credits. The MRP, worth six credits, serves as a capstone project that hones research and writing skills, preparing students for further graduate work such as PhD programs or diverse career paths that value advanced analytical abilities. A notable feature of the program is the annual Graduate Student Conference, held every spring, where students present their MRP proposals to a wider academic audience, fostering scholarly engagement and feedback.
