COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Specialization in History at Nipissing University offers students a deep and rigorous exploration of historical knowledge and critical thinking skills. To graduate with this designation, students must complete 120 credits, including 60 credits within the Honours Specialization in History, and achieve a minimum 70% average in those 60 credits. The program begins with 6 credits at the 1000 level in introductory History courses, where students build foundational knowledge and develop essential skills in historical analysis. This is followed by 12 credits at the 2000 level, offering more focused studies in various thematic or regional areas. Students then complete 30 credits at the 3000 level, where they engage with more specialized topics, primary sources, and deeper historiographical debates. Finally, 12 credits at the 4000 level provide opportunities for advanced research and scholarly inquiry, often culminating in seminars or major projects. Beyond the History credits, students must also fulfill general degree requirements, including ACAD 1601 (3 credits), 6 credits in Social Science and/or Professional Studies, 6 credits in Science, and 45 elective credits. The program equips students with strong research, writing, and analytical skills, preparing them for graduate study, teaching, public history, law, and other careers requiring critical engagement with the past.
