COURSE CURRICULUM

The Specialization in Sociology at Nipissing University requires students to complete 120 credits, including 54 credits in Sociology, with a minimum average of 60% in those courses. Core courses include SOCI 1016 Introduction to Sociology, SOCI 2016 Exploring Social Conflict and Solidarity or SOCI 2017 Communication, Power, and Capital, SOCI 2126 Introduction to Sociological Research Methods, SOCI 2127 Quantitative Research Methods, and 42 credits at the upper level in Sociology. Alongside these, students must fulfill Bachelor of Arts degree requirements such as first-year regulations, subject maximums, and breadth requirements, including ACAD 1601, humanities, science, and electives totaling 120 credits. An optional Anthropology stream is available for Sociology students, requiring an additional 18 credits, including ANTH 1006 Introduction to Anthropology, ANTH 2006 Ethnographic Imagination, ANTH 3407 Contested Concepts: Power & Perspective, and nine more credits in Anthropology or cross-listed courses. This stream offers a deeper understanding of cultural and social dynamics, complementing the Sociology specialization. The program prepares students for critical analysis of social structures, research methods, and real-world applications, fostering a comprehensive understanding of human societies and social issues.
