COURSE CURRICULUM

The Specialization in Philosophy at Nipissing University requires students to meet both the program and Bachelor of Arts (four-year) degree requirements, including regulations on first-year courses, subject maximums, and breadth requirements. To graduate, students must achieve a minimum 60% average in the 54 credits presented for the specialization. The program consists of a total of 120 credits, including 54 credits specifically in Philosophy. Core courses include PHIL 2506 Thinking Clearly and PHIL 2507 Bullshit, Bias, and Propaganda: Reasoning about the Irrational, each worth 3 credits, as well as a 3-credit 4000-level Philosophy course. Students must complete 9 credits in the History of Philosophy, choosing from courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Idealism, Existentialism, and Eastern Philosophy. Additionally, 9 credits in Value Theory are required, with options like Values and the Human Condition, Contemporary Moral Issues, Bio-Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Digital Ethics, and Social and Political Philosophy. Beyond these, students must complete 27 additional Philosophy credits. Breadth requirements include ACAD 1601 (3 credits), Social Science and/or Professional Studies (6 credits), Science (6 credits), and 51 credits of electives. This structure offers a comprehensive and rigorous education in philosophy, encouraging critical thinking and engagement with diverse philosophical traditions.
