COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in Indigenous Studies at Nipissing University requires students to meet both program-specific and Bachelor of Arts degree requirements, including regulations on first-year courses, subject maximums, and breadth requirements. Students must maintain a minimum average of 60% in the 36 credits completed for the major. A foundational course, INDG 1006 Madjitang (In the Beginning) – An Introduction to Indigenous Studies, must be completed with a minimum grade of 60%. The major requires students to complete 36 credits, which include 12 credits at the 2000 level and 18 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level. Additionally, students must complete 3 credits in Indigenous Studies at any level. It is strongly recommended that students take the Indigenous language course INDG 1306 to deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures. Students may count up to 12 credits of cross-listed courses toward the major, provided these credits are not used elsewhere in their program. A maximum of 6 credits at the 1000 level can be applied to the major. Breadth requirements include ACAD 1601 (3 credits), Humanities (3 credits), and Science (6 credits). This program offers a well-rounded education focused on Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues, preparing students for various careers or further study.
