COURSE CURRICULUM

The Specialization in English Studies at Nipissing University requires students to complete 120 credits, including 54 credits within the specialization, with a minimum 60% average. Students must complete an introductory English Studies course with at least a 60% grade. The specialization coursework is divided into three key areas: 3 credits at the 1000 level, 9 credits in Literary Foundations, 9 credits in Innovation and Action, and 33 additional credits in English Studies. Students must also fulfill Bachelor of Arts degree requirements, including breadth courses such as ACAD 1601, 6 credits in Social Science or Professional Studies, 6 credits in Science, and 51 elective credits. There are limits on course credits, including a maximum of 6 credits in English Studies Topics courses at the 1000 level, 30 credits at the 2000 level, and 6 credits each for 1-credit English courses and cross-listed courses counting towards the specialization. Literary Foundations courses cover a range of topics such as Canadian literature, Shakespeare, Anglo-Saxon literature, British literature, and more. Innovation and Action courses explore diverse subjects including graphic novels, speculative fiction, postcolonial and Indigenous literatures, media studies, popular fiction, and environmental themes, providing a broad and dynamic study of English in both traditional and contemporary contexts.
