ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Nipissing University is a public institution located in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, with its campus overlooking Lake Nipissing. The university’s origins trace back to 1947 when local residents sought to establish a university in the city. This effort led to the creation of Northeastern University in 1960, which offered first-year courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce in a local Catholic boys’ high school. The institution’s application for a degree-granting charter was denied in 1961, leading to the temporary cessation of classes. In 1962, Northeastern University resumed operations in leased facilities on Cassells Street, collaborating with Laurentian University professors who taught extension night classes, a partnership that continued until 1967. In 1967, the institution was renamed Nipissing College and entered into an affiliation agreement with Laurentian University, allowing students to receive Laurentian degrees while studying in North Bay. The College Education Centre, opened in 1972, became the central facility for Nipissing College and was shared with other educational institutions including Canadore College, a nursing school, and a teachers’ college. In 1973, the North Bay Teachers’ College was incorporated into Nipissing College as the Faculty of Education. Nipissing University achieved independent university status in 1992, enabling it to grant baccalaureate degrees. In 2001, the Ontario government revised the university’s charter to permit the awarding of graduate degrees. The governance of Nipissing University follows a bicameral system modeled on the University of Toronto Act of 1906, consisting of a faculty senate responsible for academic policy and a board of governors managing financial and other formal matters. The university president acts as a liaison between these bodies and provides leadership to the institution. Over the years, Nipissing University has evolved from a small local initiative into a fully independent university offering undergraduate and graduate education, maintaining strong community connections while supporting research and academic growth in Ontario.
