ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), founded in 1955, is a private research university with campuses in Old Westbury on Long Island and Manhattan, as well as locations in Arkansas, China, and Canada. Originally modeled on the European polytechnic system, NYIT emphasizes career-oriented education and applied scientific research, balancing science and engineering with liberal arts. The university has grown from its first campus in Brooklyn and an initial enrollment of 300 students to over 7,700 full-time students worldwide in 2023. NYIT has five schools and two colleges offering more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The institution is particularly renowned for its contributions to computer graphics and animation, with its Computer Graphics Lab playing a pivotal role in the development of entirely 3D CGI films, nurturing founders of Pixar and Lucasfilm and Turing Award winners. NYIT has hosted notable figures such as Bill Gates and has fostered international research partnerships, including with the Holon Institute of Technology in Israel. Beyond academics, the university supports competitive sports teams, including its four-time NCAA Division II national champion lacrosse team. NYIT alumni and faculty include leading scholars, inventors, government officials, professional athletes, and recipients of major awards such as the Turing, Emmy, and Academy Awards.
