COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Child and Youth Study (MCYS) non-thesis program at Mount Saint Vincent University is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the field of child and youth studies while integrating applied research theory with professional practice. This program requires the completion of a minimum of 5.0 units of coursework, beginning with foundational courses such as GCYS 6010 and GCYS 6012, which introduce students to essential theories, contemporary issues, and professional contexts in child and youth studies, along with GCYS 6035, which focuses on research skills and critical analysis. Students also complete GCYS 6120 and GCYS 6121, which emphasize applied projects, program evaluation, and the integration of theory into practice. In addition to these core courses, students choose 1.0 unit of GCYS electives to explore specialized topics relevant to their interests and career goals. The program also includes 0.5 unit of research methods from approved courses such as GEDU 6100, GEDU 6107, or GAFS 6606, ensuring students develop the methodological skills needed for evidence-informed practice. Finally, 1.0 unit of graduate-level electives provides flexibility to broaden their expertise in related fields. Through this combination of coursework, electives, and applied learning, the MCYS non-thesis program equips students to advance their professional knowledge, apply research-based strategies in real-world settings, and assume leadership roles in child and youth sectors.
