COURSE CURRICULUM

The Joint Master of Arts in Women and Gender Studies, offered collaboratively by Mount Saint Vincent University and Saint Mary’s University, requires the completion of 3.0 units of coursework along with a 2.0 unit thesis, for a total of 5.0 units. The program is designed to provide students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in feminist theory, methodology, and gender studies, while offering opportunities to explore global and local issues related to gender, social justice, human rights, health, education, media, family relations, creative arts, and community activism. Required courses include GWGS 6601/SMU WGST 6601, GWGS 6602/SMU WGST 6602, GWGS 6603/SMU WGST 6603, and GWGS 6620/SMU WGST 6604, complemented by 1.0 unit of free electives that allow students to tailor their program to their research interests. Central to the program is the 2.0 unit thesis (GWGS 6699), which involves the development of a research proposal, rigorous investigation, and written documentation of findings, culminating in a formal thesis defense. The thesis demonstrates students’ mastery of research skills, critical analysis, and scholarly communication, and must adhere to the academic specifications of the student’s home university. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared for academic, research, policy, or community-based careers in gender and women’s studies.
