COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Child and Youth Study (MACYS) thesis program at Mount Saint Vincent University is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of issues affecting children and youth, while developing their skills in conducting original, focused research. The program requires the completion of 5.0 units of coursework, beginning with foundational courses such as GCYS 6010 and GCYS 6012, which introduce students to the core theories, practices, and contemporary issues in child and youth study, and GCYS 6035, which emphasizes advanced research skills and methodologies. Students also complete a 1.0 unit course, GCYS 6130, which is focused on applied research and professional applications. In addition to these required courses, students select 1.0 unit of GCYS electives, allowing them to explore specialized areas of interest within child and youth studies, and 0.5 unit of research methods from approved courses such as GEDU 6100, GEDU 6107, or GAFS 6606, ensuring they acquire the necessary methodological skills to conduct a rigorous thesis. The program is rounded out with 1.0 unit of graduate-level electives, providing flexibility to broaden knowledge in related disciplines. Together, this combination of coursework and research equips students with the theoretical grounding, practical skills, and scholarly expertise to undertake an original thesis project, preparing them for careers in research, policy, and professional practice in child and youth sectors.
