COURSE CURRICULUM

In the B.Ed. program, all students develop expertise in two teaching areas, typically aligned with their major and minor disciplines, with methods courses designed to provide the essential subject knowledge required for effective teaching. Major and minor methods courses are offered in areas including business education, English, family studies, French, mathematics, science, social studies, and visual arts. The program requires completion of 10.0 units, including 2.0 units in curriculum practices (1.0 unit each for major and minor methods areas), 4.0 units of required courses such as EDUC 5321, 5327, 5350, 5352, 5354, and 5355, plus 1.0 unit of an approved EDUC elective selected from a wide range of options to allow customization of study. Students must also complete 3.0 units of practicum and practicum seminars, including EDUC 5390 (1.0 unit) and EDUC 5395 (2.0 units), gaining practical teaching experience. Continuation in the program requires passing all practicum courses; receiving an “F” in any designated practicum course prevents progression. Practicum placement is contingent on good academic standing, and delays or denial may occur if prior coursework is incomplete. Additionally, all students must complete a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and a Child Abuse Register Search, as mandated by government and school boards, with unfavourable results potentially barring participation in field placements.
