COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child & Youth Study major requires students to successfully complete 22.0 units, combining professional coursework, practicum placements, arts and science courses, and electives. Students must complete 2.0 units of supervised practicum, with at least 0.5 unit under CHYS Department supervision, while maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 in 9.0 units of required coursework, excluding certain courses. Required CHYS courses (9.0 units) include foundational and advanced classes such as CHYS 1110, 1120, 1130, 1140, 2201, 2208, 2209, 3311, 3320, 3336, 4407, 4416, 4417, NUTR 2240, and 2.0 units of CHYS electives. Practicum courses (2.0 units) include CHYS 2251, 3351, 3352, and 4451, which provide hands-on experience in community-based programs for children, youth, and families. Arts and Science requirements (6.5 units) include BIOL 1114, ENGL/WRIT, HIST, LIBR 2100, MATH 2208, PSYC 1110, 1120, 2221, 2222, plus additional social science, humanities, or related courses. Students also complete 4.5 units of electives, with a minimum of 0.5 unit at the 2000 level or above. Practicum placements occur on scheduled weekdays or in summer block sessions, and students must meet GPA and prerequisite requirements. Failure to successfully complete practicum prevents continuation in the program.
