COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry Honours program at Mount Allison University is designed for students with a strong interest in chemistry who wish to gain in-depth knowledge of the discipline and prepare for post-graduate study or research-oriented careers. Building upon the 63-credit Chemistry Major, the Honours program requires a total of 81 credits, including the foundational courses in general chemistry (CHEM 1001, 1021), mathematics (MATH 1111 or 1151, 1121, 2111, 2121, 2221 or CHEM 3201*), introductory biochemistry (BIOC 1001, 2001), physics (PHYS 1051, 1551**), and intermediate chemistry courses (CHEM 2111, 2211, 2311, 2411), which together provide a solid grounding across the main branches of chemistry. Honours students then complete 21 additional credits in 3000- and 4000-level chemistry courses, selected in consultation with the Program Advisor, allowing specialization and depth in areas of interest. The program also includes CHEM 4903, a three-credit advanced course, and CHEM 4990, a six-credit thesis research course, offering students the opportunity to conduct original chemical research under faculty supervision, typically during the summer following the third year. The Chemistry Honours program emphasizes critical thinking, experimental design, and analytical skills, equipping graduates with both theoretical knowledge and practical research experience, making it an ideal preparation for graduate studies, professional scientific careers, or roles in industry, environmental science, pharmaceuticals, and related fields.
