COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in Biology at Mount Allison requires a total of 75 credits, building on the foundation of the Biology Major. Students first complete 60 credits as required in the Major, which provide a comprehensive grounding in biology through a combination of introductory, intermediate, and upper-year courses across organismal and cell biology, biochemistry, ecology, genetics, evolution, and specialized form and function studies. This core curriculum ensures students acquire both breadth and depth in biological sciences while gaining hands-on experience in laboratory and research settings. In addition to the Major requirements, Honours students must complete 9 credits from BIOL 4903 and 4990, courses designed to emphasize independent research, advanced methodologies, and critical scientific thinking. Furthermore, students select 6 additional credits from upper-level Biology courses at the 3000/4000 level in consultation with the Program Advisor, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest such as marine biology, developmental biology, applied genetics, environmental microbiology, or physiology. This combination of structured coursework and individualized research preparation equips students with advanced knowledge, practical skills, and research experience, effectively preparing them for graduate studies or professional careers in biological sciences and related fields.
